To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope this Shades of Space Edition shows a beautiful picture taken by Fermi Gamma Ray. Fermi Gamma Raywas launched on 2008 and is a space observatory being used to perform gamma-ray astronomy observations from low Earth orbit.
The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope is a NASA spacecraft. It is in space studying the most powerful sources of radiation in the universe. Radiation is energy that is in the form of light or of moving particles that are smaller than atoms. The most extreme type of radiation is gamma rays.
Visible light, which is the light that people can see, has medium-length waves. Radio waves have the longest wavelengths. Microwaves and infrared light waves also are longer than visible light waves. Ultraviolet (or "UV") rays, X-rays and gamma rays all have wavelengths that are shorter than visible light. The shorter the wavelength, the more energy the radiation has. Gamma rays have the shortest wavelengths; therefore they have the most energy.
The reverse of the coin presents a spectacular image of the Gamma Rays, as a combination of X-Rays and infrared emissions, omitting some of the stars to let the silver surface shine through the applied colour. On the top-right of the reverse, the inscription: “SHADES OF SPACE” – the name of the coin. The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Coat of Arms of Samoa. All around the effigy, the inscription: “SAMOA” – the issue country, “20187” – the year of issue, “1 oz Ag 999” – the weight of the coin and the fineness of the Silver and “5 DOLLARS” – the face value.
